My Fandom Has Challenge Anxiety
I haven't paid that much attention to boyband challenges, but I think it's pretty funny that the first BtVS challenge to sweep LJ Land in a while is making just about everyone freak out. And damn, I swear there's a Willow babblelogue I wanted to quote where she what-ifs herself into a hyper, hand-waving panic attack, but I can't think of what it's from, or even if I'm just imagining it. Early Willow, of course, version 2.0 or 3.0. Back when she was precocious and perky-browed.

Then again, it could have been Wiggy Buffy.

My Thai food is filled with scary cabbage.

Faith, Hope, and Trick?
"It's the freedom! As Seniors, we can go off-campus now for lunch. It's no longer cutting. It's legal! Heck, it's expected! Wow, it's, uh, also a big step forward, a Senior moment, one that has to be savored. You can't just rush into this, you know? ... Oh! No, I can't! Oh, but, no! What if they changed the rule without telling? What if they're lying in wait to *arrest* me a-and, and throw me in detention and mar my unblemished record?"

Yup. I be freaked. I've been asked to write a)slash (and you saw how well that worked in my April Fool's joke...as in, not), b)characters from a show I'm not really familiar enough with yet, or a character for whom I lack sufficient pop culture references. Yeah, yeah. Expanding horizons builds character. So does whining. That's my story, and I'm sticking to it. ;)

Yeahhhhhhh, but...have you ever thought about your recipient would feel--or will feel--when she finds out that you took no pleasure in writing for her? That in fact you actively disliked doing it? Which is kind of how it comes across, from the level of your distress. A challenge should be a fun thing, not a cause for people to feel defensive about the pairings and stuff that they've requested.

The unfamiliarity with a show, though, seems a pretty significant handicap. Maybe you can get a trade-in on those grounds. I mean, if I had never watched Angel and was asked to write a Fred/Gunn story, I'd be up a creek.

Hey, didn't say I wouldn't enjoy writing - I always enjoy writing. But I am freaked. These are not my cup of tea, that's for sure, and frankly? I'm afraid the story will suck like a big ol' sucky thing.

Well, the other one is a Buffy pairing, but as I say, I'm severely lacking in pop culture references. Oy.

Stretching. Ow.

[submerged in evil]There's a Buffy challenge going on?[/submerged in evil]

No, seriously, nobody pays attention to the boyband challenges unless they want to pillage the ideas behind them for other fandoms (often while conveniently typing out their anti-RPF manifesto with the other hand!). Many of the boyband challenges are exceedingly silly. Unfortunately, some of those are exceedingly silly in appealing ways.
