...and maybe when Rodney was five he wanted to be a Mountie. shut up.
For the last several weeks I've gotten incredibly tired in the evenings. Somewhere between six and eight every night I just crash like cut timber, life draining from my body, my only compensatory strength the ability to kill people with my yawns. I fall into bed or onto the couch, and zone. But my brain refuses to fully let go, so it's not satisfying rest. I mention this for no particular reason. I'm just spammy today and I'm trying to keep myself awake.

I just added someone's post to my memories. When you're doing that, the page says, "Who can see that you've marked (this entry as memorable?)" and for a moment I thought it said "Who can see that you're naked...?" I'm only naked under my clothes, damn you. You...you can't see me, can you? *paranoia*

Obligatory SGA content: I saw a story mentioned the other day, an AU where Rodney was in the military and John was a scientist (Chaos Theory by Amireal, mentioned here). Are there any other stories out there based on this idea?

Fandom is a hive mind, and cliches are like viruses traveling through its blood (friendly viruses, like the Ebola plush doll) which is why I'd already been kicking that fantasy around for a while. Rodney is my current Spike--I give him makeovers the way I did Spike, though mostly in my head and less so in stories. Not because I don't like these characters as they are, but because they are my toys and they must bend to my will and dance at my whim. Dance, tiny soldier Rodney, dance!

Anyway. Colonel McKay. Is there more of him out there? Where he's all tight, lean muscle and stubbled iron jaw, and can shoot the wings off a fly at a hundred yards? And he knows jujitsu and krav maga, and once skinned an elk with his bare teeth while crossing the Yukon on foot? In winter? Or something like that.

dude, if you do find another? send it my way please. i absolutely adore the idea of military!Rodney, simply because i think he'd be fascinating in pretty much any role you placed him. i mean, really - all that passion and knowledge and brilliance aimed at something like warfare? *shivers*
seriously, i think the love of this type of thing comes from stumbling onto military!Blair fic in The Sentinel fandom... hot scientists with guns... yum.
and also... Rodney as a mountie? guh. bibble. and also merfliffle. because Rod in the Red? Teh HOTT.

I'm hoping that people will rec more stuff in comments tomorrow. My fingers are crossed--well, my legs, but that counts, I'm sure.

There's another one that I just read where John is a medical doctor who gets recruited by the SGC and sent to Atlantis because he's got genuine OR/ER experience (vs. Beckett being a geneticist, I guess) and Rodney is, I think, still a phd, but he's also military...damned if I can remember who wrote it though.

Hmm. Doesn't ring a bell. Maybe someone else will see this and know. :)

I really enjoyed Teamwork, in which Rodney is, yes, a Mountie.

Ohhh, cool! I will go take a look--thank you! :)

You really need to talk to Helenish about this Colonel McKay thing, if you haven't already. She has plenty to say about the subject. :)
Anna S.: rodney-happy-smileeliade on December 4th, 2005 05:45 am (UTC)
Oh *really*? She's been holding out on me. Or else she's posted about it and I read her post and I just have a terrible memory, and so it sank into my subconscious and fertilized it with these thoughts--which is more likely.

I'd like to see a fic with a bare elk that knows krav maga, personally.

Fandom is not about the naked elk!

No, there's definitely something...intriguing about Colonel McKay. (Not to mention GeekyScientist!John.) If you were to write something along those lines, or even find another story with that premise, I don't know, lurking somewhere (say, under a couch cushion), well, I'd... Okay, I have no money or any real marketable skills. But I could write something for you. Or, hey, a kidney. Got an extra one of those.
Anna S.: cat-adorableeliade on December 4th, 2005 07:36 am (UTC)
Kidney? I've always wanted a kidney. My parents had to sell mine when I was little to pay for their Hawaii vacation. You are so lucky! *wistful*

And yes, we can all see you naked.

*modestly covers bosoms*

I think I've read at least *two* fics switching roles like this.

There was a vice-versa challenge (role reversal) on the sga flashfic community that I'd totally forgotten about--I need to browse into those stories again. :)

ohhh, Rodney in the military - I have absolutely no problem believing this idea comes to almost everyone independently, because imagine if Rodney yelled at people and gave orders and threw backbacks at people every week and said things like "let's move!" and the thing is that John seems so out of it ANYWAY, all the time, that he'd obviously be extremely focused on his research and very absent-minded and terrible with women (canon-alert!).

Anyhow, I talked about this - incoherently, as it happens,

here - scroll down past all the bitching about work to the part where I love Rodney McKay.

and then people comment-fic-almosted it further down, here.

In re-reading it, I just can't get over how sweet John and Zelenka would be, being friends, doing math, solving problems, collaborating, never ever yelling at each other. The closest they'd get to yelling would be, like, smirking a little when one of them was right. Oh, OH! and Zelenka would totally be the Rodney figure - always busting into meetings and doing almost all the talking and saying "no no no, is WRONG, city will SINK if we do that!" to Elizabeth, while John stands behind him holding the printouts and pencils. It's not that Zelenka has all the answers, John's just quieter. A lot quieter. I'm not even sure how he makes it onto the team, because Zelenka's the obvious choice. Clearly Rodney hand-picks John for some reason--ooh, he sees him working coolly under pressure or something, and John gets really quiet and tries to get out of it. He's just here to study mathematical singularities (or what have you.) On the other hand, maybe they need him to pilot the jumper, and he can't say no to that.

Also, bonus! Ronon would LOVE military-commander Rodney, since he clearly respects people who give clear orders, and they would have long discussions about their personal zen journeys of becoming total hard-asses, and John would be ridiculously jealous and go off to sulk with his white-board.

You might talk to your doctor about this; it's possibly a side effect of the ADHD meds. I know that it happens to me when my timed-release dexedrine wears off.
Anna S.: foraminiferaeliade on December 5th, 2005 02:01 am (UTC)
Hmmm. Interesting. I actually did tell him about it on Thursday when I met with him for a med review, and was a little surprised that he didn't seem to have many thoughts on it. Like me he apparently attributed it to my current eating & (lack of) exercise habits, which was the theory I proposed. I'm not on the amphetimine-type ADD meds anymore though, but on Strattera, which I don't *think* works the same way. Are you familiar with that?
