fandom makes me sad today.
Fandom shouldn't make me sad. There's something very wrong in LJ-Land lately. And I have a fairly modest, conservatively tailored friends list, comparatively speaking, so I think it's everywhere. It's pervasive, it's permeating everything. I know some people who are still very much dedicated to mailing list culture who have a lot of criticisms to make about LJs, and I've always rejoined by pointing out all the cool and positive things about LJ culture. It is a hotbed sometimes. But so are lists, and I think it's usually harder to tailor list memberships and subject matter to suit yourself.

I don't get how, with all the coolness of the cool people I rub shoulders with in LJ--like all the sweet peaches who replied to my last post--the carnival as a whole so often fails to amuse me, fails to add up to more than the sum of its parts. I'm all negative and shit, I guess. And maybe not putting in enough to get back what I need. In contrast, as an example, I think anniesj is the most brilliant example of the laws of social reciprocity that I've ever seen--she reaps what she sows, and it's all good. If I had more energy she'd be my role model.

Meanwhile, on my TV, the mad scientist is confiding conversationally to a severed head. I think I'll focus on that for a while.

Stupid tendency to argue. . .

Will have pretty spike-as-girl, hopefully in the next week or two to distract you with ;D

You're right that there is a lot of negativity floating around LJ-land at the moment, but there's also a lot of cleverness and supportiveness and humor and good feelings. It's there. I promise.

Hey! Your t.v. stole my ds_flashfiction story! No fair! :)

Its the tiffles. Too many people arguing over stupid stuff and calling people names. Brings people down, damn them.

It'll roll over, feel better.

Well come over here and dance with me a while.
That'll make the LJ Blues go away!

Sorry, my fannish stuff hasn't been very dramatic at the moment. My writing is all for zines and my vids are in the capture phase.

Oh, wow, Anna. Wow. ::goggles:: I'm in love with you right now. I really needed to hear that, after getting my two lumps from <a href="http://journalfen.com/community/fandom_wank>fandom_wank</a> today. Yeah, I knew I needed a good wanking, and I'll grin and bear it because I was wanky, but still. Ouch. Hearing that right now, from YOU of all people, a writer and person I greatly admire, especially because of your constant level-head in fandom ... well, there are no words. Other than we now must have lots and lots of gay sex. Also, yes, I totally agree with you -- there is an air of negativity that seems to be hanging around LJ-land recently. If it's not attacking Spike, it's attacking Buffy, or it's attacking Angel, or the guy who played the janitor in "I Only Have Eyes for You". I'm not sure whether to blame this on summer apathy or the lull after the show's ending. Probably a bit of both. Thank you so much, sweetie. ::snuggles you:: Now I want to write Spander for you. Tell me what you want, you sexy bitch.

Your link didn't work, Annie! An' I wanna see where you were wanked!

Sadness
If you would appreciate an outsider's perspective, as an Australian viewer who isn't yet in the position of having watched the BtVS and AtS season finales, the general malaise does seem to be about the end of Buffy in some respects. Even though the Buffyverse continues on in AtS, there is a distinct uncertainty about how BtVS and AtS will mesh. The end of season confidence in the direction of the show is lacking, and that is what is coming out in fandom.

Re:
beautiful icon... the recent poster release just served as a focus, stuff was already here. It's a process. It takes time. Things will shift and realign... and be back, but different, like the show.
Narrmorrnarrmorr on July 29th, 2003 09:01 am (UTC)
Thanks for the compliment about the icon. It just seems like such bad form to pimp my journal in a comment to Anna's post about fandom malaise ... but hey, I'm a long-time lurker, brand new livejournaler this week. I could do with some visitors.

:)

"I'm all negative and shit."

My new slogan!

I wouldn't have gotten this way if it hadn't been for that horrible, poorly-conceived, "what were they thinking of?" character, Mrs. Gwendolyn Post. I know for a fact that the series never recovered from that fiasco. Stupid stupid ME.

:: hugs you and wishes she could write you some consoling Spander :: You can at least gaze at my icon until you feel a bit better.

Holy crap, that's pretty!
