"Your moo goo gai pan is good, but your prophecies are terrible."
I've been taken by the idea lately of writing pairings that are of no great interest to me, and seeing if I get more interested in them through writing. Examples: Angel/Buffy, Gunn/Fred, Angel/Cordelia, Buffy/Xander, Angel/Xander, Giles/Xander, Spike/Dawn. And so on. Many of these pairings are het. I probably won't write them, but I think about it.

I have spent the day so far battling bundt cake Photoshop, html fragments, shtml, css, and server delay. I now want to kill things. Or eat peeps. Or kill peeps, eviscerating their mallowy guts before eating them. Some combination of the above.

Thank god there was no javascript or I'd have to kill puppies.

I haven't had a drink in several days and am feeling pretty good about that. I've been rereading Drinking: A Love Story and want to post excerpts at some point. It's a brilliant book. As I was reading, I mentally listed characteristics of my own drinking (drinking alone, drinking when stressed, etc), and was going to write them down, but then my interest in doing so waned. Maybe another time.

wesleysgirl posted a link to Zug's Pranks. I'd read The Credit Card Prank before ("How wacky do you have to make your signature before someone will notice?") but that's it. These were in varying degrees hilarious and disturbing. (And inappropriately hilarious at that, but I am twelve.)

Things I've done so far this week:

- Bought lipstick and remembered to tithe the homeless
- Worked out and did not let myself get traumatized by the Stairmaster despite its attempts to destroy my will to live
- Did laundry, lots of laundry
- Cut down on breakfast and lunch spending
- Watched pigeons

That last one probably won't advance me far along the karma track, but their little toes are funny.

Bonus link of the day.

I actually really like a lot of those pairings... Angel/Buffy in particular, but I have warmed up to Angel/Cordelia (especially after seeing her last ep in season 5 *sniff*) and i always thought Fred and Gunn were really cute together. I also thing Spike/Dawn is adorable but only in a platonic way. More? Euck. Angel/Xander would actually be hilarious... or disturbing. Either way.

Have you heard of the book Smashed? I don't remember who the author is, but it's very recent. It's written by a 23 year old and it's about her college years and the issues she had with drinking. Two very smart people I know found it to be a really great book, so you might like to check it out. :)

I think I saw it mentioned in Salon.com but had forgotten about it--I've added it to my Wish List so I won't forget. Thank you! :)

Hmm. That's interesting. I think I've only ever read really dark and mean and angsty Angel/Xander (well, with one exception), so it's become my default impression of the pairing--and thus, not so very appealing. But *funny*, now. That's a new way of looking at it. I could read some funny A/X. I wonder if there's any out there?
Barbrahirah on March 30th, 2005 12:47 am (UTC)
If not, someone should remedy the sitation. (waggles eyebrows significantly) Funny A/X I could really get into, because OMG the Oscar and Felix possibilities...

You tempt me, you really do! /plots

I always thought Spike and Xander were Oscar and Felix...
...can't quite decide which is which though...
Barb: metarahirah on March 30th, 2005 02:38 pm (UTC)
Much as I love Spike and Xander together, the attraction there is that beneath the surface differences, the two of them have a lot on common, whereas Angel and Xander... (shakes head)

...very Odd Couple indeed...

You're very welcome!

I wonder too! I've never read any at all. I didn't necessarily mean intentionally hilarious, it could just be terrible-hilarious. I don't really know how that could be done in a way that actually works. I tend to read pairings that are at least potentially canon. Hmmmm. Let me know if you find any funny ones! :)

I wrote one A/X that was supposed to be funny... not all that 'shippy though.

Cuteness! Angel's at his best when he's dorky, nervous, and uncomfortable.

He is! I think the ultimate in sweet was 'They talk about me in the chatty rooms?' with that pleased, bemused grin on his face.

Well, if you're feeling particularly violent you could immolate peeps and then eat them. The sugar caramelizes. Mmmmmm...peeps on the barbeque.
Anna S.: cat_chickeneliade on March 30th, 2005 12:49 am (UTC)
But not with BBQ sauce, because that would just be wrong.

Mmm, peeps. Must go raid the discount drugstore shelves on the way home...

Oooh, new pairings. That's one of the fun/potentially scarring things about ficathons. Being forced to write pairings I wouldn't likely get around to writing makes my writing muscles feel all stretchy. The results are anyone's guess, but still.

I'd love to see your take on Gunn, not necessarily with Fred, but whatever. Mmmm, Gunn. And Spike/Dawn has a certain odd appeal, at times.
Trepkos: Crushed by Becky Bootrepkos on March 30th, 2005 01:35 pm (UTC)
Spike/Dawn has a certain odd appeal, at times.

Yeah, but how much would Spike loathe himself if he let that happen?
julia_herejulia_here on March 30th, 2005 01:45 am (UTC)
I read practically anything except Giles/Buffy or Gles/Dawn, although all Angel shippiness is a hard sell for me; I find Drusilla most interesting as a moinor character. I can't get into preseries fics. I started writing the ship fic because I was convinced I couldn't write fiction at all and I didn't want to mess up my enjoyment the stuff I like by failing at it. So now I'm up to about 50,000 words of an Angelus/Drusilla story set in 1867.

It's a weird experience, very much like having to write a long research paper in linguistics as a requirement of a grad program in Archaeology, except I'm actually writing this instead of dropping out.

So? Go for it, I guess, it's a way to find out stuff you don't know you know.

Julia, muddying the waters as is my way

No! New pairings are bad, bad I tell you! Then you'll become a rabid Angel/Cordelia shipper and I'll have to force pieces of onion on to my eye so that my sobbing might turn you back from this evil path of erm, writing other things that you'd probably enjoy but that's neither here nor there.

Every time Spike's not written into a sex scene a tiny baby easter chick dies. And I've got a sack here so don't make me do it.

You have had a good week.

Now don't worry Trepkos - when the baby chics die they become peeps. And then they get eaten...

OMG that link to the penis enlargement experiment was exquisite! Sausage wrapped in bacon!!! ::hyperventilates::

PS I don't know what the heck to say when you mention drinking, but I will say I'm glad you're talking about it. Things always seem better when shared with someone. Except if it's one of my family members. :0D

No worries. I'm sure many people feel that way, and I feel the same way when reading other people's posts--often. It's hard for me to think of anything more to offer than "*hugs*" most of the time. ;) But from my end of things, that's plenty to receive. (Am I even coherent in this comment? Me talk pretty one day.)

Hm...
Writing pairings that don't interest you? Hm... that's a new thought. Gunn/principal Wood maybe? Fred/Riley? Don't think I could stomach writing a Bangel story, though. I'm a Spuffy girl...

Anyway, I friended you and I just thought I should drop by and say hi. I'm a fellow BtVS fanfic writer who has just gotten a LJ account and started writing again after a RL-related hiatus. The story I'm writing at the moment is called "Roads Less Traveled", and is a fantasy fic with a current Spangel pairing.

I'm looking forward to reading more of your fanfics!

Re: Hm...

What I'm thinking of is, like, what is Buffy's POV about Angel in, say, season two, when it's all this fresh and passionate wanting, and she's sixteen and he's two-hundred and sixty, or however old he is. It would be interesting to try and get into her mindset from an angle I hadn't tackled before, to try and understand her better--very young girl, new to Sunnydale and to her slayerness, experiencing first love, budding sexuality, etc.

Gunn/principal Wood maybe? Fred/Riley?

Oh, you picked interesting ones. *g* Gunn/Wood would be pretty.

Anyway, I friended you and I just thought I should drop by and say hi.

Hi! :)

I'm reading S/A more now--I must remember to check it out, thanks!
